NEW in 2023: Introduction to Improv

This intro-level performance class is all about thinking on your feet! Learn about foundational acting techniques through games and scenes made up completely on the spot. Each night, your instructor will introduce new performance concepts before incorporating them into common improv games and structures that use the actor’s tools (voice, body, and imagination) to bring scenes to life. Bring your energy and your smile, and let’s have fun!

 

Introduction to Silk Fan Veils

Drawing from a variety of dance traditions, silk fan veils are colorful and dynamic dance props that add elegance and beauty to basic movements. This class will introduce participants to the basics of fan veil techniques, including grips, opens/closes, and simple movements, before building a few combos and exploring the principles of musicality. This is a very beginner-friendly course, and requires no prior dance experience. The silk veil fans will available for your use during your class, though you can feel free to bring your own.

 

Silk Fan Veil Choreography

Added: Reviewing and building on the basics of our Intro to Silk Veil Fan Flow course, this four week series incorporates additional musicality and coordinated sequences to create a full song choreography, set to music from Cleveland-local artists. Students will learn the full routine throughout the course, so consistent attendance is recommended. Props will available for your use during your class, though you can feel free to bring your own.

 

Introduction to Leviwand

This magical, floating wand will quickly become your new favorite dance partner! A flow favorite for all ages, the leviwand (levitation + wand) is a fun, simple to learn dance prop that offers a wide range of individual styles and experimentation. In this beginner-friendly introductory course you’ll learn about different types of leviwands, practice the basics of fingerloop “day” wanding, and start to explore some of the principles of contact wanding. No prior experience is necessary. Props will be provided for in-class use, though you are welcome to bring your own.

 

Introduction to Off-Body Hoop Dance

While we traditionally think of hula hooping as an around-the-waist endeavor, modern hula hooping has taken this former children’s toy to the next level! With the advent of off-body hooping, the hoop has become a truly beautiful dance prop with a huge range of play – and you don’t have to be able to keep it going around your waist to join the fun. Off-body hooping uses smaller hoops to create stunning works of movement. In this class you’ll learn many of the building blocks of hoop dancing, along with some combos and musicality tricks to help you build your flow. No experience necessary. Props will be provided for in-class use, but if you have your own hoop please feel free to bring it.

 

Introduction to Poi Spinning

Poi spinning has become a rapidly growing flow dance/object manipulation movement, developed from Maori and Polynesian traditions. Frequently seen at festivals, parties, and circus events, poi are a fun way to build movement coordination and focus! This class will introduce participants to the basics of poi spinning techniques, including planes/plane control, spins/anti-spins, gridwork, and foundational flow theory. This is a very beginner-friendly course, and requires no prior experience. Poi sets will be available for your use during your class, though you can feel free to bring your own.
